Holiday Splendor at The Ringling: My Family’s Favorite Toys for Tots Tradition

Every December, as Sarasota’s weather finally cools down and the air feels lighter, my family marks one particular event on our Christmas to-do list: The Ringling Toys for Tots toy drive. For the price of one new, unwrapped toy, The Ringling throws open its doors—inviting the community to explore the Ca’ d’Zan, the Circus Museum, the art galleries, and the stunning museum grounds.

The Ringling's annual Toys-for-Tots toy drive

But it’s not just about free admission. The real magic happens when local schoolchildren take the stage. Scattered throughout the estate, groups of kids sing carols, perform jazz, and spread Christmas cheer. Their voices echo through the galleries, courtyards, and terraces, weaving holiday spirit into a place already steeped in history.

Fun Fact

Started in 2003 – The event marked its ninth annual run in 2011, meaning the tradition dates back to the early 2000s.

A Favorite Family Memory: December 6, 2018

One evening stands out above the rest. On December 6, 2018, we walked through the grand doors of the Ca’ d’Zan and were greeted by a couple dressed as John and Mable Ringling themselves. It was as if history had stepped into the present, welcoming us into their home.

Outside the Circus Museum, a group of children sang Christmas songs. Their friends and family gathered close, some snapping photos, others swaying along. The whole scene had a Norman Rockwell quality—ordinary people wrapped in extraordinary holiday warmth.

Under the watchful eye of David, local school children perform Christmas songs at The Ringling

Inside the Ca’ d’Zan, the mansion was alive with Christmas. Each room revealed another surprise: trees sparkling with ornaments, mantels adorned with garlands, and delicate decorations that, we were told, had once belonged to the Ringlings themselves.

When we stepped onto the Bayside terrace, the Gulf breeze reminded us it was December. Jackets were zipped, scarves pulled tighter. Just then, another group of children struck up a carol, their voices rising against the backdrop of a breathtaking Sarasota Bay sunset.

It was a postcard moment—golden light dancing on the water, the sound of waves lapping the seawall, and kids singing their hearts out.

Fun Fact

Original Decorations – Some of the Ca’ d’Zan’s Christmas ornaments were actually owned by John and Mable Ringling, offering visitors a glimpse into the mansion’s holiday past.

Why The Ringling Toys for Tots Toy Drive Matters

This tradition, officially called Holiday Splendor, began in the early 2000s and has been running for more than two decades. Each December, The Ringling partners with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program to collect toys for families in need across Sarasota and Manatee Counties.

In return, the community gets a chance to experience The Ringling in a whole new way:

•All-access admission with just a toy donation.

•Performances by local schools, giving children the thrill of singing and playing in one of Sarasota’s most prestigious venues.

•Festive decorations, including some original ornaments that once brightened the Ringlings’ own holidays.

It’s a true example of community spirit—art, music, history, and giving, all wrapped up in one unforgettable evening.

Fun Fact

Student Spotlight – Performances include choirs, jazz ensembles, drumlines, and bands from local elementary through high schools.

Why We Keep Going Back to the Ringling Toys-for-Tots Holiday Splendor

For my family, The Ringling’s Toys for Tots night is more than just an outing. It’s become a holiday ritual. Each year, we wrap a toy, head to the grounds, and soak in the magic—never knowing which group of students will surprise us next or what detail in the Ca’ d’Zan will catch our eye.

It’s also a reminder of Sarasota’s unique blend of history and community. Where else can you walk through a Venetian-inspired mansion, hear jazz from kids in the courtyard, and know you’re also helping make another child’s Christmas brighter?

That’s the beauty of Sarasota. That’s the spirit of The Ringling.

toys-for-tots ringling includes local school children performing songs at various venuses.

Later, near the Statue of David in the Museum Courtyard, a jazz band of middle schoolers played Christmas classics. We found a spot, sat back, and let the music wash over us. For the next half hour, all felt right with the world.

We’d come to support Toys for Tots, but we left feeling like we’d been given far more than we had given.

Fun Fact

Perfect Timing – The event is usually held in early December, just as Sarasota’s weather turns cooler. Expect evening temps in the 50s or 60s—yes, you may need a jacket in Florida!

Inside the Ringling College of Art & Design: A Hub for Creativity and Innovation in Sarasota

Ringling College of Art and Design Sarasota isn’t your typical Florida campus—it’s a launchpad for creative careers where students trade lecture halls for studio time and walk away with degrees that open doors to some of the biggest names in art, design, and entertainment.

Degrees That Launch Creative Careers

Ringling offers a surprisingly wide range of majors for a school its size. Students can pursue:

🎨 Illustration – preparing future book, magazine, and concept artists.

🎬 Film & Animation – some of the most competitive programs in the country, feeding directly into studios like Pixar, Disney, and DreamWorks.

💻 Game Art & Virtual Reality – blending design and tech for careers in gaming and immersive media.

🖋️ Creative Writing – developing storytellers for publishing, TV, and film.

🎧 Motion Design, Photography, Graphic Design, Fine Arts, and more.

What makes Ringling stand out? Students aren’t just studying theory—they’re building portfolios with industry-ready work by the time they graduate.

A friend’s daughter pursued photography at Ringling. While costly, the parent believed then (& now) her daughter gained value. She learned photography as art & as business.

Why Students Choose Ringling College of Art & Design

Parents often ask, “Why Ringling over bigger art schools in New York or LA?” The answer is focus. Ringling is a boutique campus where class sizes are small, professors know your name, and every project is geared toward preparing you for the industry.

For students, the draw is obvious:

Reputation. Ringling consistently ranks among the top art schools in the U.S.

Industry Connections. Recruiters from Pixar, Sony, Marvel, and major ad agencies look here first.

Florida Lifestyle. While Sarasota isn’t a “college town,” the flip side is fewer distractions and a chance to build close-knit friendships within the creative community.

Where Do Graduates Go?

This is the question every parent asks—and Ringling has the kind of answer most schools dream of. Graduates have landed jobs at:

Pixar & DreamWorks (animation & storyboarding)

Disney (visual development & media design)

Electronic Arts (game art & VR development)

Marvel Studios (concept & digital design)

Publishing houses, ad agencies, and media companies worldwide

In short: Ringling grads don’t just get degrees—they get hired.

A Note on Location: What Parents Should Know

Ringling College sits in Northwest Sarasota, an area that sometimes raises questions for parents. The reality? Like many urban-edge campuses, the surrounding neighborhood has a mix of older homes, commercial spaces, and pockets that feel less polished than downtown Sarasota or Siesta Key.

Parents worry about safety, and that’s fair. But Ringling takes this seriously:

🚨 Campus security is active and visible.

🌙 The campus itself is gated and well-lit at night.

🚍 Students typically stick to campus or head downtown, to the beaches, or to UTC for fun.

The upside? Students get a safe, self-contained campus that encourages them to focus on their art while still being minutes from Sarasota’s cultural scene.

Ringling College of Art and Design Sarasota is Internationally Recognized...For Good Reason

Ringling College of Art & Design proves that Sarasota isn’t just a sun-soaked getaway—it’s a creative powerhouse.

Here, the next generation of artists, filmmakers, and designers sharpen their craft in studios that buzz with imagination and ambition.

The campus hums with energy as students from around the globe bring new ideas to life, often collaborating with major brands, studios, and industry leaders before they even graduate.

It’s one more reason Sarasota stands apart from other Gulf Coast destinations—a place where art, innovation, and inspiration are woven into everyday life. From the Sarasota Art Museum to public murals downtown, creativity doesn’t just live here—it thrives here.

Fence Art in Sarasota: Tropical Murals That Bring Wooden Fences to Life

Fence art Sarasota transforms plain wooden panels into tropical storyboards filled with dolphins, sunsets, and Florida icons.

🌅 A glowing Gulf sunset, labeled “Sarasota: Where Summers Never End.”

🐢 A sea turtle gliding effortlessly through painted waters.

🐬 Dolphins leaping in arcs that felt almost alive.

🐊 An alligator lurking—easy to overlook, but uniquely Florida.

🐦 Blue herons and pelicans, standing tall as coastal sentinels.

🎨 One panel with a bold reminder to “live ambitiously.”

Every brushstroke turned an ordinary fence into a celebration of Sarasota’s tropical identity.

Why Fence Art Stands Out

Unlike murals painted on city walls, fence art is tucked into neighborhoods, along schools, or framing a side street. You don’t always expect it—which makes it more fun when you stumble across one.

Traditional six-foot fences suddenly become canvases, transforming otherwise blank wood into outdoor galleries. For Sarasota, where sunshine and tropical icons are part of daily life, fence art feels like an extension of the city’s character.

A Living Gallery of Florida Icons

What I love most about Sarasota’s fence art is the variety. One fence might capture wildlife—manatees, herons, flamingos—while another celebrates landmarks like the Ringling Causeway. Some lean whimsical, others realistic. All of them add color and joy to our community.

In a city known for its professional galleries and theaters, fence murals remind us that art isn’t limited to curated spaces. Sometimes, the best galleries are the ones you find unexpectedly on your evening drive.

Fence Art Sarasota Deserves More Than a Glance

fence art sarasota pelican & flamingo

The next time you’re out around Sarasota, keep your eyes open for painted fences. You may spot tropical sunsets, sea creatures, or inspiring words peeking out from behind a row of palms. Fence art doesn’t just brighten wood—it brightens the whole neighborhood.

Village of the Arts in Bradenton: A Colorful Walk Through Sarasota’s Neighboring Art Scene

The Village of the Arts Bradenton is unlike any neighborhood I’ve ever experienced. These 1920s bungalows, transformed into whimsical studios and homes, don’t just display art—they are art. And if you’ve never visited during one of their monthly Art Walks, you’re missing one of the most magical evenings the Gulf Coast has to offer.

"Kat Houze" during ArtWalk March 2022 in Village of the Arts Bradenton

I’ll never forget March 4, 2022, when my wife and I finally experienced the Village of the Arts in full bloom. Hundreds of people strolled through normally dark streets (there are no streetlights here), but on this night, the artists illuminated their cottages in radiant color. Every corner revealed something new: murals on walls, paintings spilling onto sidewalks, and musicians filling the air with sound.

A Neighborhood Painted in Personality

As we wandered, I couldn’t help noticing the two faces of the Village. Some bungalows glowed, beautifully restored and alive with color. In one photo I snapped, a coral-pink house exploded with murals of tropical flowers and bold portraits, its charm undeniable.

But just down the street, another home told a different story. The house itself was tired, its upkeep falling behind, yet its wall still bore an expressive mural of stylized figures. The talent was there, even if the property wasn’t maintained.

That juxtaposition struck me. Every bungalow here is someone’s canvas, whether polished or weathered. Together, they reveal the raw, unfiltered character of the Village: art first, conformity last.

Did You Know?

Many of the Village’s 1920s bungalows were once modest worker homes — today they’re transformed into some of the most colorful galleries and studios on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Murals that Speak to You in Village of the Arts Bradenton

Some murals felt like they were painted just to grab your attention. The one I stopped to admire—a Day of the Dead–inspired skull—was playful and haunting all at once. A few steps away, I saw a serene musician sitting cross-legged atop a lotus flower. That contrast of bold and tranquil is the essence of VOTA: it’s a neighborhood that never speaks in one voice.

Did You Know?

The Village of the Arts is home to more than 200 murals, and many of them are repainted or refreshed every few years, so the neighborhood never looks the same twice.

Art Indoors, Outdoors, and Everywhere In-Between

On Art Walk nights, artists invite you into their studios—or bring the gallery outside. The following studio looked like a candy-colored gingerbread house, glowing with pinks and yellows. It felt like walking into an interesting fairytale complete with a skull boldly inviting or warning.

bold, inviting art studio at Village of the Arts Bradenton

Others–like this property–  transformed their gardens into immersive installations. Sculptures, string lights, and canvases spilled into the yard, blurring the line between private home and public gallery featuring dazzling jewelry.

That night, art wasn’t confined to walls. It lived in the air, on fences, in gardens, and under glowing porches.

Did You Know?

On Art Walk nights, front yards often double as pop-up galleries, with sculptures, canvases, and installations spilling beyond the walls of the homes.

Kaya Bar & the Sound of Music

One of the highlights of the evening was stumbling into the backyard Kaya Bar. Under string lights, surrounded by paintings and sculptures, we listened as Dovy Das, a talented musician from Lithuania (and a big YouTuber), performed live. His voice and guitar filled the night air, adding a rhythm to the Village’s color.

DSC02479

What a surprise to discover the Kaya Bar’s immersive backyard. We walked into an art gallery and bar-like setting, exploding with color, music, & good vibes. And then a few blocks away, the Birdrock Taco Shack buzzed with energy. Tables spilled onto the front yard as people enjoyed tacos, drinks, and conversation, mixing with the music and the art.

Did You Know?

Internationally known Lithuanian musician Dovy Das has performed at the Village’s Kaya Bar, turning a backyard stage into a YouTube-famous performance spot.

Whimsy in Every Corner

The Village is full of details you might miss if you’re not looking closely. A hand-painted sign points toward “Tattoo, Studio, Café” as if the Village needed to remind you—everything here is art.

At another art studio, a front yard becomes a sculpture garden, dotted with eclectic pieces that look part whimsical, part surreal. These aren’t just decorations—they are statements.

And then there were the immaculate homes like the one with the mural painted on the side of the studio, a coral-colored studio whose yard and porch looked perfectly maintained, Throughout VOTA, the contrasts confirm a polished counterpoint to the raw, graffiti-style bungalows elsewhere. That’s the charm of VOTA: every home/studio tells its own story.

bold mural on side of house/studio in Village of the Arts Bradenton

Did You Know?

Some of the Village’s most eye-catching decorations — from hand-painted signs to whimsical yard sculptures — are made entirely from repurposed or upcycled materials.

Resilience Through Storms

The storms of 2024, including Hurricane Milton, weren’t kind to the Village as you’d quickly guess. How could these artists remove all art from outside their studios (and/or homes)? Additionally, you’ve noticed massive trees nestled in among these charming cottages and bungalows.

At Halloween last year, we returned to VOTA. It was a different experience. Perhaps we arrived too late (8 PM). Trick-or-treaters scurried to and from the handful of houses with lights turned on. The absence of strong street lights cast an eerie darkness on Village of the Arts…on Halloween. Hurricane-force winds and VOTA surely don’t mix well. Some murals were washed out, some cottages damaged. VOTA lost Bird Rock Taco Shop that in March 2022 seemed to be the beating heart of the Village.

But that’s the thing about the Village: art here isn’t permanent, and that’s part of its beauty. Like Sarasota’s shoreline, it shifts and rebuilds, constantly evolving.

Did You Know?

Even after storms like Hurricane Milton in 2024, the Village bounced back quickly, with artists repainting and rebuilding — sometimes adding new layers of art where damage once was.

Why the Village of the Arts Matters

"be daring..." advice in Village of the Arts Bradenton

Walking through the Village that March night reminded me why places like this matter. It isn’t a polished theme park or a curated gallery — it’s a living community of artists who open their doors and invite you in.

At the bottom of the “Flora and Fauna” print by artist Tom Casmer (2018), he describes the Village of the Arts: “The Village of the Arts is a kaleidoscope of unique shapes, vibrant colors, and rich textures created by the tree canopy, beautiful backyard gardens, and brightly colored homes. Free roaming felines have made front porch swings and sunny spots their home for the day.”

The Village of the Arts in Bradenton is quirky, imperfect, and unforgettable. Art here isn’t just something to view — it’s something to walk through, to feel in your bones.

Floria and fauna at Village of the Arts Bradenton

I look forward to returning. In hindsight, last Halloween wasn’t the best time to visit, but I’m grateful the Village endured the storms of 2024. While no buildings appeared destroyed, I’m sure the neighborhood looks different today — with new artists, new backyards, new restaurants, and fresh bursts of creativity filling front yards and porches once again.

Florida Studio Theatre: Sarasota’s Intimate Stage in the Heart of Downtown

Florida Studio Theatre Sarasota is where big laughs, bold cabaret, and intimate performances light up downtown’s arts district—steps from dining, galleries, and nightlife. I still remember the first time my wife and I ducked into the Florida Studio Theatre (FST) on a December evening a few years back. Sarasota was dressed in lights for the holidays, Palm Avenue was alive with music and curbside dining, and we decided to make a night of it.

florida studio theatre sarasota exterior view at night

Inside, we found ourselves swept into a Christmas-themed performance that was as warm and joyful as the season itself. More recently, we caught a comedy that poked fun at everyday life—the little things we all do that, if we paused long enough, we’d laugh at our own follies. That’s the magic of FST: it doesn’t try to be the biggest stage in town, but it knows exactly what it does best.

Fun Fact

Florida Studio Theatre began in 1973 as a small improvisational company called the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre Lab, and today it operates five intimate performance spaces, making it one of the largest subscription theatres in the country.

A Theatre That Knows Its Niche

In Sarasota, theatre lovers are spoiled for choice. The grandeur of the Van Wezel, the polished productions at the Asolo, the bold artistry of the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe—each has its place. But FST carves out its own lane.

Van Wezel in sarasota exterior view
Asolo Repertory Theatre in sarasota exterior view

Throughout the year, FST presents a thoughtful schedule that blends cabaret, contemporary plays, improv, and family-friendly productions. You’re just as likely to find a cabaret filled with show-stopping Broadway hits as you are a witty comedy about relationships, or an improv troupe riffing on audience suggestions. FST thrives on intimacy: smaller venues, close-up performances, and stories that feel personal. Instead of competing with Sarasota’s larger stages, it complements them.

The Best Address in Sarasota’s Theatre District

Part of what makes FST so special is its location. Nestled in the heart of Sarasota’s downtown arts district, FST is steps from the new Art Ovation Hotel and right around the corner from Main Street. You can grab dinner curbside at one of Sarasota’s many restaurants, browse the art galleries along Palm Avenue, or linger at an outdoor concert before your show begins.

Fun Fact

Main Street Sarasota was first paved with brick in the 1920s and still serves as the heart of the city’s dining and nightlife scene—many of the original storefronts are now restaurants and boutiques.

The area is alive with nightlife—wine bars, piano lounges, coffee shops, and boutiques that stay open late. It’s the kind of neighborhood where a theatre performance isn’t just the evening’s main event, but part of a whole night out. Sarasota has always been a city that punches above its weight in the arts, and FST benefits from being right at the center of it.

Performances That Bring People Together At The Florida Studio Theatre Sarasota

What I appreciate most about FST is that it offers performances that bring people together. Whether it’s a holiday revue, a lighthearted comedy, or an improv night, you’re bound to find yourself laughing, clapping along, or leaving with something to talk about over dessert at a nearby café.

Schedule of shows for Florida Studio Theatre
Talented performers present fun, engaging shows to Florida Studio Theatre

FST’s lineup is designed for accessibility: affordable tickets, varied genres, and approachable stories that appeal to both seasoned theatre-goers and those dipping their toes into live performance for the first time. It’s not theatre that demands you come prepared—it’s theatre that invites you in.

Why FST Belongs on Your Sarasota Itinerary

If you’re visiting Sarasota, you’ll probably hear plenty about Siesta Key sunsets or the Ringling Museum—and those are must-sees. But for a true taste of Sarasota’s cultural heart, consider an evening at the Florida Studio Theatre. Pair it with dinner on Main Street or a gallery stroll down Palm Avenue, and you’ve got the makings of an unforgettable night.

outdoor dining in Downtown Sarasota

Fun Fact

Downtown Sarasota’s dining scene is unusually international for a small city—within a two-block radius of FST, you can find authentic Peruvian ceviche, handmade Italian pasta, French bistros, and modern farm-to-table American cuisine....and many more top-rated restaurants with ambience.

For locals like my wife and me, FST has become a reliable favorite—a theatre that feels approachable, creative, and distinctly Sarasota. It’s where you can laugh at yourself, hum along to familiar songs, and step out into the warm night air of downtown knowing that the evening isn’t quite over yet.

Whether you’re a local looking for a 🎭 night of laughter or a visitor wanting to soak in Sarasota’s vibrant downtown, Florida Studio Theatre is the perfect blend of culture, comedy, and cabaret. Before you plan your evening, don’t miss these helpful resources:

Asolo Repertory Theatre Sarasota: World-Class Performances on the Cultural Coast

Asolo Repertory Theatre Sarasota delivers Broadway-caliber productions in a historic setting that makes every performance unforgettable. I remember the first time I experienced the Asolo Repertory Theatre. It was the late 1980s, and I had taken a group of high school kids to a matinee performance. Like many of them, I was seeing it for the first time. The ornate theatre—with its dramatic stage and upper level seating—looked grand, and as the lights dimmed, the audience seemed to become one with the actors. At the Asolo, the shows came alive.

Through the years, I’ve experienced many productions at Asolo Rep, and every one of them has been outstanding. One Christmas, my family and I absolutely loved A Christmas Carol. Van Wezel Sarasota | Concerts, Comedy & Broadway on the Bay

Van Wezel Sarasota, the iconic “Purple Cow” on the bay, brings Broadway musicals, top performers, and unforgettable concerts to the heart of Florida’s Cultural Coast.

For years, my family and I have been attending shows at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Most of the time it’s been for music groups and concerts, but some of my fondest memories aren’t inside the theatre at all.

van wezel upcoming programming

I still remember one of the first years of FridayFest, the Van Wezel’s free summer concert series on its south lawn. My kids were young back then, and while my wife and I soaked up the music, they had other priorities—snowcones and food trucks. With sticky fingers and blue-and-red mouths, they couldn’t have been happier. For us, it was pure joy: the band playing as the sun set over the Bay, lawn chairs under the palms, and a welcome break from Sarasota’s summer humidity.

The crowds were small in those early days—Sarasota itself was a quieter, slower place. But the music was excellent, the food truck aromas filled the air like a neighborhood barbecue, and the Van Wezel had already established itself as more than just a building. It was a gathering place.

An Iconic Sarasota Venue

van wezel sarasota front outdoor view

The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall is hard to miss. Its lavender walls, scalloped roofline, and sweeping bayfront lawn make it one of Sarasota’s most recognizable landmarks. Since opening in 1970, the Van Wezel has brought world-class performances to town while still feeling approachable—a place where locals and visitors alike come to be entertained.

Affectionately nicknamed the “Purple Cow,” the hall has become as much a part of Sarasota’s identity as Siesta Key Beach or the Ringling Museum.

A Schedule That Delivers Every Time

One reason the Van Wezel has remained such a beloved venue is its ability to book exactly the kind of shows Sarasota audiences love. The staff knows its crowd, and it shows in the lineup.

This season includes everything from Broadway musicals and holiday classics to comedy and iconic touring groups:

More Than Concerts At The Van Wezel Sarasota

What makes the Van Wezel truly stand out is its range. Beyond headline concerts, the theatre hosts:

🎭 Broadway musicals

🌍 Top national and international performers

😂 Popular comedians

🎼 World-class symphony orchestras

💃 A compelling mix of classical, modern, and ethnic dance

The Van Wezel also partners with Sarasota’s own cultural institutions. Each year, more than 50 performances are presented here by the Sarasota Orchestra, Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Concert Association, and the Ringling Library Town Hall Lecture Series.

This mix ensures the Purple Cow isn’t just a stage—it’s a hub for Sarasota’s entire performing arts community.

Sand Art & Sand Sayings in Sarasota | Messages in the Sand

Sand art Sarasota has a way of surprising me when I least expect it. Over the years, I’ve stumbled across messages etched in the sand near the water’s edge—little sayings that made me stop, smile, and sometimes even snap a photo before the tide swept them away. These sandy creations aren’t part of a festival or formal competition. They’re as natural as seashells and sunshine, moments of expression left behind by people who knew their words or designs would last only a few hours.

sand art sarasota pays tribute to Jimmy Buffett

Sand Sayings: Words That Wash Away

I still remember the first time I saw “Wish u were here” scrawled in giant letters near the shoreline. You could almost hear the joy of whoever wrote it, a message meant for someone miles away, etched in saltwater and sunlight.

Another favorite? A simple “I ❤️ SRQ.” Sometimes it’s just three letters and a heart, but it carries an entire story about love for this place. And then there was the timeless: “All is well w/ my soul.”

One memory stands out crystal clear. It was November 12, 2014, at exactly 1:49 p.m. I was walking Siesta Key when I came across: “Life is better in flip flops SK 2014.” The tide was already rolling in, swallowing the edges of the words. A few minutes later, it was gone. If I’d arrived any later, I would have missed it entirely. That’s the beauty of sand sayings — they live only in the moment.

Fun Fact

Did you know the average wave cycle at Siesta Key can erase shoreline writing in as little as 15 minutes? That means many sand sayings disappear almost as quickly as they appear.

Just as often as words, I’ll stumble upon sand art. Not professional sculptures, not part of a festival — just creative souls using their hands and the shoreline as their canvas. Hearts outlined with shells. Spirals and suns carved with flip-flops. Castles built by kids that somehow look as grand as fortresses in miniature.

The joy is that they’re ordinary creations — as natural as baseball and apple pie. You know a child or family had fun making them, but you also know the sea is waiting, ready to smooth the sand back into its blank slate.

Occasionally, I stumble upon sand art that baffles me. Who integrates dead fish during a Red Tide outbreak in his/her/their sand art?

Baffling!

Fun Fact

Sarasota’s white quartz sand is 99% pure quartz crystal, which stays cool underfoot and packs tightly. That makes it ideal not only for professional sand sculptors but also for casual beachgoers shaping art by the tide.

Professional Sand Art with a Message

Of course, professional sand sculptors take the practice to another level. Their work often carries a message — sometimes written, sometimes silent but undeniable.

One that stopped me in my tracks was a newborn baby, eyes closed, resting against a parent’s hand. No words were necessary; the sculpture itself spoke to every parent’s heart. Another time, I saw a cross with the words: “Let the light in.” Words and form working together, sending a message more powerful than either could alone.

These sandy creations fall into different worlds, each with their own kind of magic. The sayings — Wish u were here or All is well w/ my soul — are simple, joyful expressions, the kind you imagine someone writing on impulse before the tide washes it away.

The casual art, like castles, spirals, or hearts outlined in shells, feels just as natural. You know kids or families had fun shaping them, but you also know the sea is waiting to smooth it all back into a blank slate.

And then there are the pros — sculptors whose skill stops you in your tracks. Their pieces don’t just decorate the beach, they make you reflect, whether it’s a newborn carved in sand resting against a parent’s hand, or a cross with the words Let the light in.”

Of course, not every sand creation leaves me inspired. Once, during a Red Tide outbreak, I came across someone who thought it clever to integrate dead fish into their design. That one left me scratching my head. Baffling.

Fun Fact

Competitive sand sculptors often move over 10 tons of sand for a single piece, using forms, shovels, and even kitchen spatulas to create intricate details that can last for days — until wind and waves reclaim them. In Sarasota, a front end loader bulldozes the sculptures immediately following the end of the Crystal Classic Festival.

Closing Reflection of Sarasota Sand Art & Sayings

IMG 8159

Every time I come across sand art in Sarasota—whether it’s a quick love note written with a fingertip, a playful doodle at the water’s edge, or a sculpture crafted by a professional artist—I’m reminded how fleeting beauty can be. These creations exist only for a moment, but the memory lingers, just like a photograph or a story shared later.

If you’d like to experience sand art on its grandest stage, don’t miss the Crystal Classic International Sand Sculpting Festival, held each year on Siesta Key.

Watching master sculptors transform sand into towering works of art is as breathtaking as any gallery show—and it connects perfectly with the casual sand sayings you find along the shoreline.

Sarasota Murals | Iconic, Provocative & Tropical Wall Art

I still remember the first time I noticed the mermaid wall at North Lido Beach. It wasn’t part of any official “art tour.” I was just walking by, and there she was — vibrant, colorful, and a little weathered from years of Florida sun. That’s what I love about Sarasota’s murals: you don’t always go looking for them, but they always seem to find you.

Popular Sarasota murals include the North Lido Beach mermaid wall.

Sarasota murals are everywhere here. Some are iconic landmarks that locals and visitors alike can’t help but snap photos of. Others are provocative and stir debates — you either love them or hate them. And then there are the bright, tropical murals that stop people in their tracks, cameras out in seconds. Together, these murals create a patchwork of color and creativity that tells Sarasota’s story in ways plain brick walls never could.

Fun Fact

The mermaid mural at North Lido has been repainted and touched up over the years, but its design has stayed the same for more than two decades — making it one of Sarasota’s longest-standing photo ops.

Iconic Sarasota Murals That Stand the Test of Time

Some murals in Sarasota feel like old friends. They’ve been around for years, maybe touched up here and there, but always the same at heart.

Take the New Pass Grill mural, for example. I can’t grab a grouper sandwich there without glancing up at the familiar scene. It’s like the paint has soaked up decades of salt air and laughter.

Or the mermaid wall at North Lido Beach — probably one of the most recognizable murals in town. Even visitors and snowbirds know it. It’s become part of Sarasota’s coastal identity, a backdrop for selfies and family vacation photos that stretch back years…if you are able/willing to hike the 1.25 miles from the public beach parking lot to the mermaid wall.

Are you able and willing?

Then there’s the 1920s black-and-white street scene on the side of a condo building in Burns Court. Every time I walk by, I feel like I’m stepping into old Sarasota, a reminder of where we came from.

The Lido Beach Pavilion murals — depicting the old Lido Beach Casino — carry the same nostalgic weight. They connect generations who remember the casino with those who only know it through stories.

Other favorites include the circus murals on the backside of a Main Street building (a nod to Sarasota’s big top roots), and the massive sea mural on the Mote Marine building out on City Island, where dolphins, turtles, and manatees swim across the wall like a permanent aquatic parade.

And of course, the Pinecraft murals — capturing the unique spirit of Sarasota’s Amish and Mennonite community. They’re as distinctive as the neighborhood itself.

Fun Fact

Did you know Sarasota’s first large-scale mural project dates back to the 1980s, when community leaders encouraged artists to paint blank walls downtown as a way to deter graffiti? What started as “covering up” soon became a citywide celebration of creativity.

Provocative Murals: Sarasota’s Bold Side

Not every mural in Sarasota is meant to make you smile. Some are designed to make you stop, think, and sometimes even argue. From my experience, negative reactions haven’t come from the subject matter. The artist’s style unleashes disgust, rejection, or negative reaction.

“Urban” art hasn’t done well in Sarasota, Florida.

In the Rosemary District, Burns Court, and Downtown, murals have always pushed boundaries. They’re edgy, urban, and polarizing. Some locals embrace them as raw expressions of creativity, while others dismiss them as graffiti that doesn’t belong in a beach town. Either way, they get people talking — and that’s what art does.

I can’t think of a more divisive period for wall art than the 2011 and 2012 Chalk Festival, when the “Going Vertical” mural campaign brought international graffiti and street artists to Sarasota. Four of the ten murals shown above trace back to those two years, and they sparked plenty of debate.

The lightning rod was graffiti artist MTO’s mural Fast Life — critics said it looked gang-inspired and completely out of step with Sarasota’s image. Supporters defended it as bold, authentic street art. The clash of opinions turned that mural into Sarasota’s unofficial “public enemy #1” — and a perfect example of how powerful (and polarizing) public art can be.

The Chalk Festival & “Going Vertical” Sarasota Murals

Most locals don’t keep track of the Chalk Festival’s theme each year, and with Sarasota’s steady stream of new residents and visitors, the context behind some of our murals often gets lost. People see the art as it is today and react based on what they think Sarasota should look like — beach town charm, circus nostalgia, or something else entirely.

Back in 2012, the Chalk Festival chose the theme “Circus City, USA” to celebrate Sarasota’s deep Ringling roots. That same year, the festival launched a companion project called “Going Vertical,” which invited street and graffiti artists from around the world to paint massive wall murals across the city.

These works made a big impression — and not always in ways everyone welcomed:

•Bold Visuals & Iconic Symbolism: The circus-inspired imagery tapped into Sarasota’s history, while the towering murals literally elevated street art to city-scale canvases.

•Polarizing Style: Graffiti and remix artists brought an edgy, urban sensibility. Some residents loved the cultural injection, while others felt it clashed with Sarasota’s beach-town aesthetic.

•Vivid Scale: These murals weren’t tucked away on alley walls — they covered entire buildings, making them impossible to ignore and highlighting just how divided opinions could be.

•Strong Repainting Response: Bold statements invite bold reactions. Over time, some of the most controversial pieces were painted over, reflecting how public aesthetics in Sarasota constantly evolve.

In Sarasota, each neighborhood’s murals carry a personality all their own. In the Rosemary District, bold, large-scale murals often mirror the area’s energy as a hub for creativity and new development, with bright colors and contemporary designs reflecting its modern, revitalized spirit. Burns Court, by contrast, leans into its historic, bohemian charm—murals here feel more intimate, quirky, and artistic, tucked into alleyways and historic walls, adding whimsy to its already eclectic character. Meanwhile, Downtown Sarasota murals serve as cultural touchstones: vibrant, polished pieces that celebrate community, history, and local pride, acting as both public art and landmarks within the city’s urban core.

Fun Fact

The 2012 Chalk Festival’s Circus City, USA theme paired with the Going Vertical campaign left a permanent mark on Sarasota’s art scene. While many of the murals have since been repainted, the debates they sparked are still part of the conversation whenever new murals go up.

Tropical Murals: Sarasota’s Popular Postcard Walls

Siesta Key Sarasota murals boasts colorful beach sunset art

Then there are the murals everyone loves — the ones that feel like vacation postcards blown up to wall size.

The most popular might be the tropical scene greeting beachgoers to Siesta Key at the corner of Midnight Pass and Stickney Point. It’s the kind of mural that makes people pull over just to grab a picture.

You might think every tropical mural in Sarasota earns universal praise, but not quite. Take the “beachy” mural on the north wall of Siesta Key Beach Resort & Suites. Let’s just say it stirred up conversation — apparently, not everyone thinks moms should be showing their behinds in beach art.

Fun Fact

Bright tropical murals are some of the most photographed walls in Sarasota. Businesses often report a 15–20% boost in foot traffic after installing one, since they double as Instagram backdrops and marketing magnets.

Unique Murals Support & Promote Sarasota's Artistic Diversity & History

Different artistic styles strengthen Sarasota’s art scene…and enhance a town’s cultural awareness.

For instance, take a look at the Island House Taqueria off Bee Ridge. The walls explode with Mexican culture: radiant sugar skulls, Día de los Muertos imagery, and floral motifs that leap off the wall. It’s a cultural mural that transforms an ordinary corner into something unforgettable.

On the other hand, everyone smiles at & appreciates the giant dog murals at the former Boo’s Ice House & Dog Bar.

Fun Fact

More than 60 outdoor murals can be found across Sarasota and neighboring Bradenton — from the Rosemary District to the beach pavilions. Many are funded by local businesses who see murals as “public art that pays for itself” through tourism.

Why Murals Matter in Sarasota

It’s okay if you don’t like every mural you pass in Sarasota. That’s art. The good news? Wait a block or two and you’ll find another one — tropical, iconic, or provocative — ready to make you stop and look.

Things to Do in Sarasota

Sarasota’s murals prove one thing: if there’s a blank wall in this town, someone’s already dreaming of what art could fill it.

Sarasota Sidewalk Art | Burns Court’s Outdoor Gallery

What a pleasant surprise to stumble upon this gorgeous Sarasota sidewalk art. Some strolls stay with you long after the walk is over. For me, one of those was in April 2022, when I first noticed the colorful sidewalk murals in Burns Square, just south of downtown. The paint was already fading from the sun and steady foot traffic, but that almost made them more endearing. A splash of color here, a circus wagon there — little glimpses of Sarasota’s story right underfoot.

Two years later, in May 2024, I returned with my wife and kids and found the sidewalks alive with creativity. From South Pineapple to South Orange, nearly every square of pavement had been transformed into a panel of art. Some were playful, some historical, and others quietly powerful. We didn’t just stroll that afternoon — we lingered over every mural, turning a few blocks into hours of discovery.

The project, called the Avenue of Art, grew out of the inspiration of Denise Kowal’s Avenida de Colores 501c3 Cultural Arts Organization, which had already made Sarasota famous for world-class chalk illusions. The idea here was simple but brilliant: bring permanent art to the sidewalks so history, humor, and community spirit could be part of everyday life.

Artists began by sprinkling panels throughout Burns Court in 2022, then expanded until entire sidewalks became one continuous gallery. Each square was a window into Sarasota’s character — a neighborhood turned canvas.

Fun Fact

Burns Court itself has its own history of artistry. Developed in the 1920s by Owen Burns, its Spanish-style buildings and narrow streets have long been a backdrop for Sarasota’s creative and foodie scene. Think Owen's Fish Camp.

Sarasota’s Story in Panels

What I loved most about the Avenue of Art was how much of Sarasota’s story it told. Some panels took you back to the earliest days, while others simply made you smile.

Of course, not everything was serious. When was the last time you saw an octopus clutching a pineapple or adorable manatees?

Fun Fact

Every October, Burns Court gets a little spooky. Effigies dressed as “creatures” lean out from second-story windows along South Pineapple — a reminder to look up while you stroll. It’s the kind of scene that makes you think Rockwell’s 1984 hit “Somebody’s Watching Me” might have been written for this street.

A Family Memory

That May afternoon with my family wasn’t just another Sarasota outing. My kids laughed at the whimsical panels, my wife pointed out the historic tributes, and I found myself just soaking it all in — grateful that our city’s story had been told in such a public, creative way.

We covered only a few blocks, but it felt like a full afternoon. Every panel pulled us in, made us pause, and gave us something new to talk about. It was art you couldn’t just look at — you had to walk through it.

Murals on walls make a statement. Murals on sidewalks invite you to step into them. That was the magic of Burns Court’s Avenue of Art — art that you literally walked across, connecting you to Sarasota’s culture in the most ordinary yet extraordinary way.

It didn’t just decorate the neighborhood; it slowed people down, sparked conversations, and gave Sarasota one more way to celebrate its creativity in public view.

Looking back at those walks in 2022 and 2024, I’m reminded that art doesn’t have to hang in a gallery to matter. Sometimes the most powerful art is the kind that slips into your everyday path, catching you by surprise, making you laugh, making you think.

The Avenue of Art turned ordinary sidewalks into a shared story — one made up of Sarasota’s history, its characters, its landmarks, and its hopes. For me, it was never just about the murals themselves, but the feeling they created: a sense of connection, community, and pride in this place we call home.

Not-So-Fun Fact

For years, Sarasota’s sidewalks bloomed with colorful art panels celebrating our history and culture. But, as often happens, a few groups pushed the boundaries, and in response the Florida Legislature began strictly enforcing laws against street and sidewalk drawings. A good thing that many enjoyed was lost because of a few.

Sarasota sidewalk art reminds us to have fun in the sun...wherever you are
