Every December, as Sarasota’s weather finally cools down and the air feels lighter, my family marks one particular event on our Christmas to-do list: The Ringling Toys for Tots toy drive. For the price of one new, unwrapped toy, The Ringling throws open its doors—inviting the community to explore the Ca’ d’Zan, the Circus Museum, the art galleries, and the stunning museum grounds.

But it’s not just about free admission. The real magic happens when local schoolchildren take the stage. Scattered throughout the estate, groups of kids sing carols, perform jazz, and spread Christmas cheer. Their voices echo through the galleries, courtyards, and terraces, weaving holiday spirit into a place already steeped in history.

Fun Fact

Started in 2003 – The event marked its ninth annual run in 2011, meaning the tradition dates back to the early 2000s.

A Favorite Family Memory: December 6, 2018

One evening stands out above the rest. On December 6, 2018, we walked through the grand doors of the Ca’ d’Zan and were greeted by a couple dressed as John and Mable Ringling themselves. It was as if history had stepped into the present, welcoming us into their home.

Outside the Circus Museum, a group of children sang Christmas songs. Their friends and family gathered close, some snapping photos, others swaying along. The whole scene had a Norman Rockwell quality—ordinary people wrapped in extraordinary holiday warmth.

Inside the Ca’ d’Zan, the mansion was alive with Christmas. Each room revealed another surprise: trees sparkling with ornaments, mantels adorned with garlands, and delicate decorations that, we were told, had once belonged to the Ringlings themselves.

When we stepped onto the Bayside terrace, the Gulf breeze reminded us it was December. Jackets were zipped, scarves pulled tighter. Just then, another group of children struck up a carol, their voices rising against the backdrop of a breathtaking Sarasota Bay sunset.

It was a postcard moment—golden light dancing on the water, the sound of waves lapping the seawall, and kids singing their hearts out.

Fun Fact

Original Decorations – Some of the Ca’ d’Zan’s Christmas ornaments were actually owned by John and Mable Ringling, offering visitors a glimpse into the mansion’s holiday past.

Why The Ringling Toys for Tots Toy Drive Matters

This tradition, officially called Holiday Splendor, began in the early 2000s and has been running for more than two decades. Each December, The Ringling partners with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program to collect toys for families in need across Sarasota and Manatee Counties.

In return, the community gets a chance to experience The Ringling in a whole new way:

•All-access admission with just a toy donation.

•Performances by local schools, giving children the thrill of singing and playing in one of Sarasota’s most prestigious venues.

•Festive decorations, including some original ornaments that once brightened the Ringlings’ own holidays.

It’s a true example of community spirit—art, music, history, and giving, all wrapped up in one unforgettable evening.

Student Spotlight – Performances include choirs, jazz ensembles, drumlines, and bands from local elementary through high schools.

Why We Keep Going Back to the Ringling Toys-for-Tots Holiday Splendor

For my family, The Ringling’s Toys for Tots night is more than just an outing. It’s become a holiday ritual. Each year, we wrap a toy, head to the grounds, and soak in the magic—never knowing which group of students will surprise us next or what detail in the Ca’ d’Zan will catch our eye.

It’s also a reminder of Sarasota’s unique blend of history and community. Where else can you walk through a Venetian-inspired mansion, hear jazz from kids in the courtyard, and know you’re also helping make another child’s Christmas brighter?

That’s the beauty of Sarasota. That’s the spirit of The Ringling.

Later, near the Statue of David in the Museum Courtyard, a jazz band of middle schoolers played Christmas classics. We found a spot, sat back, and let the music wash over us. For the next half hour, all felt right with the world.

We’d come to support Toys for Tots, but we left feeling like we’d been given far more than we had given.

Fun Fact

Perfect Timing – The event is usually held in early December, just as Sarasota’s weather turns cooler. Expect evening temps in the 50s or 60s—yes, you may need a jacket in Florida!
