15 Sarasota Restaurants Locals Actually Recommend (Not Just Trendy Picks)

15 best restaurants Sarasota

Search online for ‘best restaurants Sarasota‘ and you’ll find endless lists built from reviews, tourist clicks, and whoever had the best lighting for a food photo.

That’s not this list.

This is a local list built on how my wife and I actually live. We’ve lived in Sarasota full-time for more than 40 years. We’re not chasing every new opening, paying premium prices for average food, or pretending dinner needs to become an event.

We value consistency. We value getting what we paid for. We value places that don’t let us down.

That mindset applies to restaurants the same way it applies to life.

Some days, my wife and I are perfectly happy with a Pub Sub from the Publix Super Market at The Plaza at Palmer Ranch. We know the deli staff. We know what we’re getting every time. That reliability has value.

So when we do go out, we tend to support restaurants that have earned our business over decades.

Some are casual. Some are iconic. Some cost more, but feel worth it for the right occasion.

These are 15 Sarasota restaurants locals (me) actually recommend.

Best Restaurants Sarasota Locals Return To Again and Again

Siesta Key Favorites

1. Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar – Siesta Key

Captain Curt’s is the kind of place that feels tied to Sarasota memories. Casual, dependable, and exactly what many people want after a beach day or a night on Siesta Key. It doesn’t need to reinvent itself every year. It simply keeps delivering.

My favorite order: Famous clam chowder and a blackened grouper sandwich
Popular picks: Peel-and-eat shrimp, fish tacos, crab cakes

2. Turtles on Little Sarasota Bay

Turtles wins because location still matters when it’s paired with consistency. Sitting on the bay at sunset with a solid meal is hard to beat. This is one of those restaurants where out-of-town guests quickly understand why locals keep returning.

My favorite order: Blackened grouper with rice and vegetables
Popular picks: Fish tacos, coconut shrimp, key lime pie

3. Siesta Key Oyster Bar (SKOB)

SKOB is fun. It’s lively, social, casual, and part of the Siesta Village experience. Sometimes you don’t need fine dining. You need oysters, a drink, live music, and a place with energy.

My favorite order: Raw oysters and peel-and-eat shrimp
Popular picks: Grouper sandwich, burgers, cold drinks

4. Sun Garden Cafe

Sun Garden Cafe is one of those breakfast spots that keeps getting recommended because it deserves it. Good atmosphere, fresh food, and breakfast that feels worth leaving the house for. That sounds simple, but plenty of places miss that mark.

My favorite order: Eggs Benedict with home fries
Popular picks: Stuffed French toast, omelets, breakfast bowls

Lido Key & St. Armands Circle

5. Columbia Restaurant

The Columbia has lasted for a reason. It offers history, consistency, and a dependable St. Armands experience. Some restaurants become famous and slowly coast. Columbia still earns its name.

My favorite order: 1905 Salad and Cuban sandwich
Popular picks: Paella, sangria, ropa vieja

6. Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar

Tommy Bahama works because it gives people what they hoped St. Armands would feel like. Good food, polished service, tropical energy, and a little escape. Some places survive on branding. This one backs it up better than many expect.

At its new location where Shore used to be, I still enjoy the upstairs balcony just like I did at Tommy Bahama’s previous longtime St. Armands location.

My favorite order: Lobster Spring Rolls with Kurobuta pork, shrimp, apricot Thai chili sauce, green leaf, mint, and basil, followed by the Blackened Mahi Mahi Tacos with tomato relish, chipotle aioli, island slaw, lime sour cream, house-made chips, fire-roasted salsa, pickled daikon, and carrots
Popular picks: Fish tacos, ribs, tropical cocktails

7. El Toro Bravo

El Toro Bravo is proof that not every great local restaurant needs a trendy address or flashy concept. Good portions, fair pricing, and satisfying Mexican food have kept it relevant for years. Value still matters.

My favorite order: Steak fajitas
Popular picks: Enchiladas, combo platters, margaritas

8. Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar

Phillippi Creek feels like old Sarasota. Waterfront character, broad seafood menu, and a place generations know by name. Some restaurants feel interchangeable. This one doesn’t.

My favorite order: Fried shrimp platter with hush puppies
Popular picks: Oysters, blackened fish, stone crab in season

9. Walt’s Fish Market

Walt’s has built trust the right way. Fresh seafood, consistency, and reputation earned over time. When locals want seafood without hype, Walt’s often comes up quickly.

My favorite order: Blackened grouper sandwich and smoked fish spread
Popular picks: Crab cakes, shrimp baskets, fresh catch dinners

10. Evie’s Tavern & Grill – Bee Ridge

Evie’s Bee Ridge is casual, comfortable, and one of those neighborhood places people quietly keep in rotation. I’m not trying to overcomplicate pizza. If it’s good, satisfying, and I’d order it again, that’s enough.

My favorite order: Meat Lovers pizza with pepperoni, hamburger, sausage, ham, and bacon. Yes, it’s about $23 per pizza, but I really like their thin crust.
Popular picks: Wings, burgers, loaded fries

11. Cafe Barbosso

Cafe Barbosso is a solid local choice when you want Italian without chain energy. It has enough style for a date night but still feels approachable. Some restaurants try too hard. This one doesn’t need to.

My favorite order: Chicken parmesan over pasta
Popular picks: Seafood pasta, veal dishes, tiramisu

12. Yoder’s Restaurant & Amish Village

Yoder’s has survived trends because it knows exactly what it is. Big portions, comfort food, hearty breakfasts, and classic meals people still crave. There’s value in restaurants that don’t forget their lane.

My favorite order: Country breakfast with eggs, sausage, hash browns, and toast
Popular picks: Meatloaf, roast turkey, fried chicken, pies

13. Owen’s Fish Camp

Owen’s Fish Camp has personality, which matters downtown. It feels more Florida than generic upscale dining. Visitors enjoy it, but plenty of locals do too. That balance is not easy to pull off.

My favorite order: Shrimp and grits
Popular picks: Fried chicken, oysters, fresh catch

14. Duval’s Fresh. Local. Seafood.

Duval’s is a polished seafood option that still feels approachable. Good service, quality food, and a downtown location that works when you want a nicer meal without turning dinner into a production.

My favorite order: Duval’s Signature Chicken Po’ Boy served on a baguette with napa cabbage, tomato, and chipotle remoulade
Popular picks: Oysters, crab cakes, scallops

15. Michael’s On East

Michael’s On East is where many Sarasota locals go when the night matters. Anniversaries, birthdays, celebrations, or business dinners. If a restaurant costs more, it should feel like it earned the occasion. This one usually does.

My favorite order: Michael’s Famous Angel Hair Onion Rings to start, followed by Michael’s Famous Bowtie Pasta with grilled chicken, pancetta, shiitake mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, snow peas, and light cream sauce
Popular picks: Prime steaks, seafood tower, wine dinners

The Kind of Sarasota Restaurant List I’d Actually Give a Friend

Yelp, TripAdvisor, Google, and travel sites can publish endless restaurant lists.

That’s fine.

Everyone values something different. Some people prioritize ambiance over food quality. Some want the newest opening in town. Some want a scene. Some want dinner to photograph better than it tastes.

I get it.

That’s just not how my wife and I usually choose restaurants.

We support places that have supported Sarasota for years.

Restaurants that feel familiar.

Restaurants that are consistent.

Restaurants where the meal usually feels worth the money.

Yes, I realize even my small voice recommending favorites can mean more crowds, longer waits, and sometimes the risk of quality slipping.

That’s the downside of telling the truth.

But restaurants come and go so fast in Sarasota now that I can’t keep up.

And honestly, I don’t try.

Food is not my hobby. I’m not pretending to be a critic. These are simply restaurants my wife and I still trust after decades of living here, paying the check, bringing friends, and returning because they rarely let us down.

That doesn’t make this the only Sarasota restaurant list.

It makes it an honest one.
