🌴 Welcome to Your Sarasota Weekend
A Little Rain Won’t Ruin Our Weekend
After 4.5 inches of rain over the past 48 hours, Friday finally gave us a dry day. And after watching that much rain come down, I’ll gladly take it!
What the rest of the weekend holds is anybody’s guess. That’s especially unfortunate because October brings some terrific outdoor events to Sarasota, from offshore powerboat racing and pumpkin festivals to Oktoberfest celebrations and live music.
But there’s no reason to give up on the weekend just yet.
I’ve rounded up some events worth considering, along with a few alternatives if the rain returns. And if Mother Nature decides to wash out our outdoor plans entirely, we’ve got some good college and professional football matchups to keep us entertained.
Sometimes the best weekend plan is having a backup.
A quick reminder: With so many outdoor events scheduled, check directly with organizers for weather-related changes before heading out.
⭐ Mike's Pick This Weekend
🚤 Englewood Beach Waterfest: APBA Offshore Championship
Thursday–Sunday, October 8–11, 2026
Powerboat Racing: Saturday & Sunday, October 10–11
Location: Englewood Beach, 2100 N. Beach Road, Englewood
If you’ve never watched offshore powerboat racing, Englewood Beach Waterfest is quite a spectacle.
Powerful racing boats, incredible speeds and the Gulf of Mexico as a backdrop make this one of the more unusual sporting events on our local calendar.
The weekend festivities also include Friday evening’s block party on historic Dearborn Street, followed by championship racing Saturday and Sunday.
Why I picked it: Watching these boats race across the Gulf is something you don’t get to experience every weekend. Between the speed, the sound and the setting, it’s a distinctly different kind of beach outing.
Mike’s Tip: With the amount of rain we’ve had, check the event’s latest announcements before making the drive. Offshore racing schedules can change when weather or water conditions become unsafe.

☀️ Sarasota Anytime
Not everything worth doing around Sarasota comes with a special date on the calendar.
Try beach yoga on Siesta Key, spend Saturday morning wandering the Sarasota Farmers Market, catch one of our weekly drum circles or get out on the water.
These are the kinds of simple Sarasota experiences you can enjoy almost any week of the year.
If nothing on this weekend’s event calendar grabs you, try one of these instead:
🥁 Drum Circles
There are opportunities around the area to catch one of Sarasota’s casual sunset drum circles—an easy way to combine a beach evening with something uniquely local.
🧘 Yoga on the Beach
Trade the studio for the Gulf. Recurring beach-yoga sessions offer an entirely different way to start—or sometimes finish—the day.
🏃 Summer Beach Runs
Summer running programs turn an ordinary trip to the beach into an evening activity, with the Gulf providing a pretty good reward at the finish.
🎭 Local Performing Arts
Florida Studio Theatre and Sarasota’s other performing-arts organizations don’t simply disappear when season ends. Summer can be a great time to catch a performance without the winter-season rush.
🌴 UTC Fun
Night markets, movies, live music and other recurring programming make UTC one of the easiest places to check when you’re looking for something casual to do.
🌴 Local Weekend Favorite
A Rainy-Day Alternative: The Ringling
The Ringling
5401 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota
When the weather doesn’t cooperate, it’s a good opportunity to rediscover one of Sarasota’s cultural treasures.
The Ringling is known for its beautiful waterfront grounds, but there’s plenty to explore indoors, too.
The Museum of Art features an impressive collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts, while the Circus Museum offers a fascinating look at the industry that helped shape Sarasota’s history.
Even after nearly four decades here, I think it’s easy to forget just how much there is to discover in our own backyard.
Mike’s Tip: The museums offer an indoor alternative, but moving between buildings involves walking outdoors. Check conditions and operating hours before visiting.
FYI: Every Monday throughout the year, The Ringling offers free admission to the grounds and museum of art. To be clear, the circus museum and Ca d’Zan are paid admission.

🌴 Before You Go...
Rain or Shine, We’re Good
After 4.5 inches of rain in two days, I was happy to see Friday arrive without another downpour.
Will it last through the weekend? I have no idea.
But here’s the thing about living in Sarasota: Not every weekend needs to go according to plan.
If the skies cooperate, we’ve got powerboat racing, pumpkin festivals, outdoor music and plenty of other reasons to get out and enjoy the area.
And if the rain returns? Well, it’s football season.
Saturday offers some good college football matchups, and Sunday brings a full slate of NFL games, including the Dolphins hosting the Bengals and the Jaguars taking on the Eagles.
A comfortable chair, a little football and something good to eat isn’t a bad fallback plan.
After nearly four decades in Sarasota, I’ve learned there’s no sense fighting Florida weather.
We’ll enjoy the sunshine when we get it. And when we don’t?
We’re good. 🙂
