Looking for things to do in Sarasota this weekend?
The final weekend of August is a good reminder that summer in Sarasota moves at a different pace.
The big festivals, outdoor concerts, art shows and packed event calendars of winter are still a few months away. Summer brings afternoon showers, vacations and fewer organized events—but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do.
This weekend includes an after-hours dining experience at Mote SEA, Laser Light Nights at The Bishop, two Friday-night movies, live music in downtown Venice and the beginning of Englewood Pioneer Days.
And when the organized calendar gets a little thin, Sarasota gives us something else: more time for the experiences that are here all summer. Farmers markets, drum circles, beach yoga, summer runs, uncrowded beaches, (local & state) parks, museums, Livingston’s, Jungle Gardens, Selby, Ringling, and spontaneous evenings that don’t require much planning at all.
Rather than filling this page with events simply to make the list longer, I’ve highlighted the experiences I think are most worth your time.
And this week, my pick is something a little different.

SEA & Savor: Moonlight & Manatees
Thursday, August 27 | 7:00–9:00 p.m.
Mote SEA – 225 University Town Center Drive, Sarasota
This is easily my pick for something different this weekend.
Mote SEA is hosting an evening that combines two things you don’t normally put together: an aquarium and an elevated dining experience.
SEA & Savor: Moonlight & Manatees takes place alongside Mote’s Manatee and River Otter habitats, with chef-inspired food stations, passed hors d’oeuvres and curated wine pairings throughout the evening.
Rather than simply visiting the aquarium during regular hours, you’re experiencing it after hours while enjoying dinner and wine in a setting that’s uniquely Sarasota.
Space is limited and advance reservations are required, so this one does require some planning.
If you’re looking for something beyond the typical dinner out, this would be my pick this weekend.

🎶 Laser Light Nights
Thursday–Saturday, August 27–29 | 7:00 p.m. & 9:00 p.m.
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature – Bradenton
Laser Light Nights continues its summer run inside The Bishop’s Planetarium, pairing immersive laser effects with music ranging from Queen, The Beatles and Elton John to Taylor Swift, Metallica, Foo Fighters, No Doubt and The Weeknd.
Different musical themes make each show a little different, and at $15, it’s an easy indoor option for an August evening.
The experience is intentionally loud—more rock concert than quiet planetarium show—and includes bright, flashing lasers. Earplugs may be helpful for sensitive ears, and the show may not be suitable for guests with photo sensitivities.
🍫 Classic Movie Night: Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
Friday, August 28 | 7:00 p.m.
Sarasota Opera House – Downtown Sarasota
Gene Wilder returns to the big screen as Willy Wonka in the 1971 family classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
Charlie Bucket’s famous trip through Wonka’s wonderfully strange chocolate factory—with Oompa-Loompas, chocolate waterfalls and plenty of lessons along the way—has entertained generations of families.
The 98-minute movie is part of Sarasota Opera’s summer Classic Movies series. Tickets are $12, and it’s another good rainy-season choice when spending Friday evening somewhere air-conditioned sounds pretty appealing.
🍿 Movies Under the Stars: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Friday, August 28 | Pre-show fun at 7:00 p.m. | Movie around 8:00 p.m.
The Green at UTC
Bring the kids, blankets and lawn chairs for UTC’s free monthly outdoor movie night.
Pre-show activities begin at 7:00 p.m. with face painting, concessions and appearances from Mario and friends before the movie begins after sunset, around 8:00 p.m.
With plenty of restaurants surrounding The Green, this is an easy one to turn into dinner and a movie without having to move the car.
And because it’s August in Florida, check the weather before heading out.
🎸 Free Music Friday Night Concert
Friday, August 28 | 7:00–9:00 p.m.
Centennial Park – Downtown Venice
If you’re heading south this weekend, The Junction 41 Band takes the stage for Venice’s Free Music Friday Night Concert.
Bring your own chairs or picnic blanket and settle into Centennial Park for a couple of hours of live music downtown. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.
Alcohol isn’t permitted in Centennial Park.
🚣 Englewood Pioneer Days
Beginning Sunday, August 30 | Englewood
One of Englewood’s longstanding Labor Day traditions gets underway Sunday as Englewood Pioneer Days returns with several days of community events.
The celebration includes longtime favorites such as the Little Miss/Mr. Englewood and Miss Englewood pageants, Cardboard Boat Races, family activities at Pioneer Plaza, a beard contest and the annual parade along Dearborn Street.
Unlike most of this week’s events, this one carries into the Labor Day holiday period, so it’s worth checking the individual schedule before making the drive.

Not every great Sarasota experience is tied to a special event. These local favorites happen most weekends and are always worth considering while you’re here.
Sarasota Farmers Market

💲 Free Admission
One of Sarasota’s favorite Saturday traditions, the market features dozens of local vendors selling fresh produce, flowers, seafood, baked goods, coffee, artisan foods and handmade crafts. Live music often adds to the atmosphere, making it an easy way to start a weekend before exploring downtown or the bayfront.
Waterside Farmers Market
📅 Every Sunday | 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
📍 Waterside Place – Lakewood Ranch
If you’re around Lakewood Ranch or UTC on Sunday morning, the Waterside Farmers Market is one of the area’s nicest weekly traditions. More than 100 vendors offer fresh produce, baked goods, specialty foods, flowers, local art, and handcrafted products along the waterfront. Live music and plenty of outdoor seating make it an easy way to spend a relaxed Sunday morning.
Siesta Key Drum Circle

This gives your readers one Saturday tradition, one Sunday morning tradition, and one Sunday evening tradition. It also introduces visitors to three distinctly different Sarasota experiences without competing with your featured weekend events.
O'Leary's Tiki Bar & Grill

📍 Bayfront Park – Downtown Sarasota
Looking for a laid-back way to kick off the weekend? On Friday evenings, O’Leary’s comes alive with live reggae from Impulse Reggae while locals and visitors gather beneath the tiki hut, around picnic tables, and on the lawn overlooking Sarasota Bay. The Best Sarasota Moments Aren’t Always on the Calendar
There’s a tendency—especially when putting together a page called Things to Do in Sarasota This Weekend—to measure a weekend by how many events are happening.
August is a pretty good reminder not to do that.
A winter Saturday might give you an art festival, seafood festival, concert, farmers market and car show competing for the same few hours. In summer, the calendar occasionally gives you almost nothing.
And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
You can decide at 5:00 that you’re heading to Lido Beach for sunset. Drop a kayak or paddleboard in the water without making an entire morning out of getting there. Walk the Ringling Bridge after dinner. Grab an ice cream on St. Armands. Find a table at a favorite restaurant that’s nearly impossible to get into during season.
Or do absolutely nothing until the sky starts changing color and then head west.
That’s part of living here, too.
The festivals, concerts and crowded calendars will return soon enough.
Until then, enjoy having a little less to plan—and a little more Sarasota to yourself.
