Your Sarasota Weekend Starts Here
Wow! Time flies. Here we are in October. Sarasota’s event calendar is beginning to look like it.
This weekend brings live music downtown and at UTC, the return of fall festivals, an outdoor movie at The Bay, beach volleyball on Siesta Key and one of Sarasota’s longstanding Sunday traditions back on the water.
Live music with some of the BEST Fresh Fridays
Whether you’re looking for a night out, something to do with the family or simply an excuse to get outside, here are a few things I think are worth your time this weekend.
⭐ Mike's Pick This Weekend
🎸 ROCKtoberfest at UTC: 7 Bands, 7 Venues, One Night
Saturday, October 3 | 6–9 p.m.
UTC District, Sarasota | Free | Ages 21+ recommended
Seven bands. Seven venues. Three hours of live music—all supporting a good cause.
ROCKtoberfest takes over the UTC District Saturday evening, with seven local bands performing at seven different locations. It’s an opportunity to catch several performances, explore some of UTC’s restaurants and enjoy an evening out while supporting Suncoast Charities for Children.
The event is held in partnership with iHeartRadio.
Here’s where you’ll find the music:
– Jack’d Up — The Green
– Madkap — Ford’s Garage
– The Rearview Mirror Band — PopStroke
– One Eyed Jacks — Florence and the Spice Boys
– J Santi & The Vital Groove — Anna Maria Oyster Bar
– The Everyday People Band — Oak & Stone
– Jason White — Origin Craft Beer & Pizza Cafe
Start at The Green, near Rocco’s Tacos, to pick up your free all-access pass and receive special offers at participating locations.
Why I picked it: I like the idea of turning an ordinary Saturday evening into a little musical adventure. Rather than settling in for one concert, you can move between venues, discover a band you haven’t heard before and stop somewhere for dinner along the way. And with the evening benefiting Suncoast Charities for Children, there’s a worthwhile purpose behind all that music. In the Sarasota area, you won’t find a more deserving charity to support than Suncoast Charities for Children.
Local tip: With only three hours and seven bands, I wouldn’t try to see everything. Pick two or three venues that interest you, start at The Green for your pass and enjoy the evening.

🏐 One More Worth Seeing
SSOVA Siesta Key Beach Volleyball Tournament
Saturday & Sunday, October 3–4
Siesta Beach | 948 Beach Road, Sarasota
There’s something about competitive beach volleyball on Siesta Key’s white sand that makes for a pretty enjoyable weekend outing—even if you’re just watching.
The Sunshine State Outdoor Volleyball Association returns for two days of tournament play. Saturday features men’s and women’s doubles across multiple skill levels, while Sunday brings coed doubles, four-person teams and junior competition.
Whether you’re a volleyball fan or simply spending the day at the beach, stop by and watch a few matches with the Gulf as the backdrop.
Local tip: You don’t have to plan your day around the tournament. Bring a chair, sunscreen and water, watch a few matches and then enjoy the beach.
☀️ Sarasota Anytime
Not everything worth doing around Sarasota comes with a special date on the calendar.
Try beach yoga on Siesta Key, spend Saturday morning wandering the Sarasota Farmers Market, catch one of our weekly drum circles or get out on the water.
These are the kinds of simple Sarasota experiences you can enjoy almost any week of the year.
If nothing on this weekend’s event calendar grabs you, try one of these instead:
🥁 Drum Circles
There are opportunities around the area to catch one of Sarasota’s casual sunset drum circles—an easy way to combine a beach evening with something uniquely local.
🧘 Yoga on the Beach
Trade the studio for the Gulf. Recurring beach-yoga sessions offer an entirely different way to start—or sometimes finish—the day.
🏃 Summer Beach Runs
Summer running programs turn an ordinary trip to the beach into an evening activity, with the Gulf providing a pretty good reward at the finish.
🎭 Local Performing Arts
Florida Studio Theatre and Sarasota’s other performing-arts organizations don’t simply disappear when season ends. Summer can be a great time to catch a performance without the winter-season rush.
🌴 UTC Fun
Night markets, movies, live music and other recurring programming make UTC one of the easiest places to check when you’re looking for something casual to do.
🌴 Local Weekend Favorite
⛷️ The Ski-A-Rees Are Back
Sunday, October 4 | 2 p.m.
Ski-A-Rees Stadium | 1602 Ken Thompson Parkway, Sarasota
Free
If you’ve lived around Sarasota for a while, chances are you’ve seen the Ski-A-Rees at least once. If you haven’t, this weekend is a good excuse to change that.
Sunday marks the first show of their 2026 fall season, with the team returning to the water at Ski-A-Rees Stadium on Ken Thompson Parkway.
Water skiers perform jumps, pyramids and other team routines right along Sarasota Bay—and the show is free.
There’s something wonderfully old-school Sarasota about spending a Sunday afternoon sitting beside the water watching a local water-ski team perform. It’s the kind of experience that doesn’t need to be reinvented every year.
Local tip: Get there a little early if you want a good viewing spot, and don’t forget the sunscreen. September may have teased us with cooler mornings, but that Florida sun hasn’t gone anywhere.

🌴 Before You Go...
A Different Kind of October
I’ve lived in Sarasota long enough to know that October doesn’t necessarily mean sweater weather.
But it does mean something changes.
Our community calendars start filling up again. Outdoor concerts return. Fall festivals begin. Restaurants and downtown streets get a little busier, and there are more reasons to get outside once the sun starts going down.
This weekend captures that transition pretty well. You can listen to live music at UTC or downtown, wander through a pumpkin festival, watch volleyball on Siesta Key or spend Sunday afternoon watching the Ski-A-Rees on Sarasota Bay.
And if none of that sounds appealing, there’s always an early walk on the beach or dinner outside when the evening finally starts to cool.
We may not get the fall colors, but October in Sarasota has its own appeal.
